Albert Francis “Big Al” Kleinman passed away on December 10, 2025, at the age of 71, peacefully and surrounded by family at his son’s home in Cedar City, Utah, following a courageous battle with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).
Born December 28th 1953 in Las Vegas, Nevada, Al spent his early life there before serving six years in the United States Army. He later found his calling behind the bar, where bartending became both a profession and a performance. Al often joked that he held three degrees from being a bartender—mixologist, psychologist, and proctologist—a line that perfectly captured his sharp wit, love of humor, and ability to connect with people. He believed bartending was like being on stage, and he never missed an opportunity to make others laugh. Al retired in 2017.
In 1988, Al moved to Yakima, Washington, where he built lasting friendships. In 2020, he relocated to Cedar City, Utah, to be closer to his son AJ and his grandchildren. Being a grandfather was one of his greatest joys, and he took pride in spoiling the grandkids, especially during birthdays and Christmas.
Al is survived by his son, AJ Kleinman; his adopted daughter, Shawna Kleinman; sisters Sandy Coffman and Debra Martinez; and brother Jeff Kleinman. He was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma Kleinman; his sister, Bobby Freeman; and his brother, John Freitag.
Spiritual but private, Al lived life on his own terms, valuing connection, humor, and presence above all else. He will be remembered as a great guy who could always make people laugh and feel at ease.
Services will be determined at a later date.
His life mattered, and he will be deeply missed. I love you Pop.
