David Carl Dutson passed away peacefully in his home on October 15, 2025, at the age of 71. Born in Nephi, Utah, on June 1, 1954, David was the fourth child of Ed and Beverly Dutson. He developed a curious mind at a young age and found a passion for fixing, building and anything mechanical.
David was raised in the small town of Lynndyl, Utah and learned the value of hard work laboring at a local farm. He graduated from Delta High School in 1972 and later studied at Utah State University to become an airplane mechanic. Prior to finishing his education, he followed the footsteps of his father and began what would become a long career with Union Pacific Railroad.
He began his railroad career side-by-side with his father in 1975 where he worked as a track laborer, track liner, brakeman and ultimately locomotive engineer. He took pride in training new engineers the skills needed to operate trains safely. He spent the majority of his almost 39 year railroad career in Milford, Utah.
He was a natural teacher who brought passion and compassion to his students. While he enjoyed teaching new engineers on the railroad, his greater joy was teaching skiing and snowboarding. He began teaching snowsports in 1986 at Elk Meadows and later moved on to teach at Brian Head until 2016. He also coached for the Brian Head Ski Team from 1997 to 1999.
He married Vickie Hutchings (Stephensen) on May 30, 1979 in Reno, Nevada. He built their first home in Minersville, UT in 1981 where he and Vickie raised their children.
Affectionately called “Super Dave” by his friends, he took pride in pushing limits and mastering almost anything he tried. He was a jack of all trades that could fix or build almost anything.
David will be missed by his wife Vickie Dutson of Cedar City, UT, his children Valarie Bulloch of Apache Jct, AZ and Derrick (Cammie) Dutson of Cedar City, UT, his six grandchildren (Jordan and Brock Bulloch, Brighton, Alexis, Skyler, Parker Dutson and two great-grandchildren Wrenleigh and Oakleigh Patterson). He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Beverly Dutson and his sisters Frances and Janine.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the Coal Creek 2nd Ward LDS Church, 290 W. 1045 N., Cedar City, Utah.
