Roger Ernest George Jones - Age 85
It is with sadness that we share the passing of Roger Ernest George Jones on June 9, 2024 in Saint George, Utah. Roger was born on May 9, 1939 in Bath, Somerset, England as the second son of Arthur and Mary Jones. Roger was a stalwart member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints who lived a life exemplary of a disciple of Christ.
Roger embraced the learning of the mind and focused his posterity on the importance of education. He graduated from Bristol University ( England) with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and furthered his studies earning a Master’s Degree in the same field from London University and subsequently obtaining his Professional Mechanical Engineer Designation. He spent the early years of his professional career in aerospace engineering working on the design of the combustible engine for the Concorde. He then moved on to the Petrochemical industry where he engineered, designed, and built refineries worldwide.
He married his “love” Patricia Doreen Glisson on December 17, 1960, and they were sealed for time and all eternity in the London England Temple. They were blessed with 5 children. They moved their family to America and lived in Pasadena, California - Glendora, California and Cedar City, Utah. Together they served two missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to Brisbane Australia and Geneva Switzerland.
Roger had a passion for his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren regaling them with riddles, jokes, magic tricks and quotes. He was legendary both within his family and all who knew him for his ability to share lengthy Shakespearean quotes from memory at a moment’s notice.
Beyond his familial legacy and success within the professional realm, he served faithfully in many callings including several Mission Presidencies, as a Bishop, and as a Stake Patriarch for 50 years, having first been called at the creation of the Thames Valley (now Reading) Stake in 1973.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Patricia; his children Clinton (Julie), Dean (Edwina), Daye (Chris), Natalie (Kurt) - 17 Grandchildren with 8 bonus in-law grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Clive (Marie), sister Angela (John), brother Nick (Jean), and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Mary, his brother Keith and his son Roger.
Roger’s life will be celebrated with a visitation at Cedar North Stake Center, located at 95 North 2125 West, Cedar City, Utah, 84720, on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 12:00 pm MDT.
